Red Book Solutions, a HotSchedules company, manages a large legacy MS SQL Server database with more than 500 tables and over 7,000 additional objects. With documentation nearly 20 years old and only one or two people who fully understood the schema, the team faced a sustainability and knowledge-sharing problem and engaged Dataedo to document and visualize the database.

Dataedo imported the schema, helped group objects into modules, and supplied a script to generate foreign keys from column names (after minor adjustments), creating nearly 3,000 relationships; the team then produced ER diagrams, field-level descriptions, and exported browsable HTML documentation to an internal site. Using Dataedo, Red Book Solutions completed the documentation in a fraction of the expected time, gave at least five users access to a central repository, preserved tribal knowledge, and improved efficiency and accuracy in development.
