Wroclaw Centre for Networking and Supercomputing (WCSS), a national supercomputing center at Wroclaw University of Technology, supports more than 3,000 researchers across many scientific disciplines. Faced with rapidly growing, data‑intensive weather and geoscience models and mixed workloads across heterogeneous hardware, WCSS needed high‑density, scalable storage and very high throughput to reduce computation time, securely handle project data, and support services like real‑time sea‑level predictions (Prognocean+).

WCSS deployed DDN’s SFA12KX and EXAScaler with Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre over InfiniBand, alongside a 3PB tape archive, to provide a 1.6PB parallel file system and parallel I/O. The upgrade delivered six times more storage per rack, quadrupled file access speed, markedly improved bandwidth and scalability, and enabled larger, faster simulations—accelerating research workflows for thousands of users and supporting real‑time sea‑level forecasting.
