Storage Performance Capable of Handling 500 Users: Building a VDI Environment Using WMware Horizon View

Toyota Technical Development Corporation (TTDC), which manages measurement and instrumentation control systems for the Toyota Group, needed a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to meet IT business continuity requirements after the 2011 earthquake. Migrating from legacy storage, TTDC faced performance, scalability and cost challenges to support a 500-user VMware Horizon View VDI environment without large upfront and maintenance costs.

TTDC deployed DDN’s GRIDScaler, SFA7700 and SFX (with SSD caching and replication to a backup site), delivering the required I/O and scalability for the VDI. The solution produced the expected 140 IOPS per VM, drove network bursts from improved storage speed, cut storage costs by about 50% and boosted performance roughly 200%, while providing a flexible, cost-effective platform for future needs.
