CSC (the IT Center for Science) is Finland’s non‑profit national IT provider for research, education and culture, operating some of the country’s most powerful supercomputers (including Louhi) and consistently ranked on the Top500. Facing a shift from traditional high‑performance computing to data‑intensive, data‑driven research—plus the need to preserve large cultural datasets and keep growth sustainable and energy‑efficient—CSC sought a scalable, cost‑effective storage strategy.

DDN was selected to deliver a multi‑million‑euro, four‑year tiered storage environment combining SFA™10K storage, a multi‑petabyte tape library and automated data‑migration software to optimize access across storage tiers. The integrated system accelerated CSC’s scientific computing and Big Data capabilities, gave the center greater flexibility to scale user services, and supported CSC’s environmental and long‑term data preservation goals.
