Cineca cuts tsunami forecasting time from 20 minutes to 5 with DataDirect Networks

CINECA, one of Italy's largest and most advanced computing centers, faced the immense infrastructure challenge of performing urgent, life-saving computing tasks like tsunami forecasting within a critically small time window. To ensure their new Leonardo supercomputer could meet these demands, CINECA turned to DataDirect Networks and its EXAScaler storage solution.

By implementing DDN's EXAScaler software along with its ES400NVX2 and ES7990X systems, DataDirect Networks provided a highly optimized storage environment. This solution decreased forecasting turnaround time by 400%, allowing a tsunami forecast to be completed in just 5 minutes instead of 20. It also increased GPU utilization to 99% and helped the Leonardo cluster achieve the #1 ranking for bandwidth on the IO500 list, ultimately providing more time for evacuations and saving lives.
