The Software-centric Data Center and the Power of Virtualizing Critical Healthcare and Database Applications

San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital, a community hospital in Banning, California, faced rising maintenance costs and severe I/O bottlenecks on its aging EMC CLARiiON and Centera storage while preparing to scale to a larger facility and support mission‑critical McKesson-Paragon and HPF systems. To avoid escalating hardware fees and improve performance and availability, the hospital evaluated a software‑centric alternative and selected DataCore’s SANsymphony‑V storage hypervisor (with VMware for server virtualization and InfiniVault for archiving).

DataCore, implemented by partner Far West Technologies, virtualized the hospital’s storage and servers—migrating about 60 physical servers into a virtual environment supporting 46 VMs on two synchronously mirrored DataCore SANs (16 TB per side). The deployment halved the data center footprint, delivered dramatic performance gains (up to 5x overall and as much as 30x for memory‑intensive tasks — e.g., index defragmenting from 1.5 hours to ~3 minutes), improved availability, and reduced costs (about $85,000 in maintenance savings over four years) while providing the scalability and flexibility the hospital needed.
