Pee Dee Electric Cooperative - Customer Case Study

Pee Dee Electric Cooperative, a non-profit utility serving more than 30,000 meters in six South Carolina counties, faced recurring storage performance issues as it virtualized mission-critical systems (notably an Oracle-based meter data management system and Exchange). Their legacy EMC CX3 SAN couldn’t keep up with the I/O demands of virtual servers and VDI, so Pee Dee Electric turned to DataCore Software and its SANsymphony‑V software-defined storage platform to deliver higher performance and hardware flexibility.

DataCore implemented a SANsymphony‑V solution (deployed by partner HillSouth) with two synchronously mirrored storage servers, a third offsite DR node, caching, and faster backend fabrics—raising spindle speed from 7.2k to 15k and FC from 4GB to 8GB. The DataCore deployment eliminated prior performance bottlenecks, scaled to support over 200 virtual servers/desktops, manages ~20 TB of capacity (replicating 10 TB across sites), handles meter data for 30,000 members, and avoided a roughly $500,000 hardware SAN purchase while providing high availability and dramatically improved IOPS.
