A Major American Hospital Tells Its Software-defined Storage Story

Maimonides Medical Center, a 705‑bed independent teaching hospital in Brooklyn with hundreds of physicians relying on always‑available clinical systems, faced rapid data growth and the need to ensure 24x7 access to patient records, imaging and other mission‑critical applications while meeting HIPAA and disaster‑recovery requirements. To address limited maintenance windows, heterogeneous storage hardware and the risk of downtime, the hospital deployed DataCore’s SANsymphony‑V storage virtualization software.

DataCore virtualized and consolidated Maimonides’ storage into an active‑active, metro‑clustered SAN across two sites, using thin provisioning, replication and centralized management to eliminate single points of failure. The DataCore solution now manages roughly 1 PB of tier‑1 virtual disks (about 2 PB total capacity), supports ~5,000 users and hundreds of virtual servers, delivers continuous 24x7 availability, improved performance and reduced administrative overhead while meeting HIPAA recovery and audit requirements.
