How AXA XL leverages natural language processing for better risk assessment

AXA XL, a global commercial and specialty insurer with 13,000 employees working across distributed teams, faced inconsistent, paper‑heavy submissions stored in PDFs that required manual re‑keying and lost data elements. To address the need to automatically extract and standardize information and build data literacy across roles, AXA XL partnered with DataCamp, using DataCamp’s custom learning tracks and courses (including natural language processing, R for actuaries, and a Data Literacy Track).

DataCamp built targeted learning paths for AXA XL’s primary personas—Actuaries and Data Scientists—teaching NLP, statistical/machine‑learning techniques, and design thinking so teams can scrape documents, translate data for underwriters, and shorten pricing turnaround. As a result, AXA XL improved its ability to feed cleaned data into decision workflows, bring actuarial and data‑science skills together, and measure success by better-informed risk decisions and monitored impacts on profitability.
