Improving road safety for heavy vehicle operations

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) needed faster, more accurate insight into Australia’s heavy vehicle fleet to better identify unsafe driving practices and improve road safety. Limited by its traditional data warehousing tools, the NHVR turned to Databricks Data Intelligence Platform to handle large-scale data, including more than 4.5 million monthly vehicle sightings.

Databricks unified the NHVR’s data and analytics on a single platform, enabling real-time reporting, dashboards, alerts, and predictive insights for more targeted safety interventions. The results included a 4% increase in high-risk fatigue infringements yielded, improved crash prediction modeling, and better targeting of roadworthiness and over-mass risks, while also reducing costs through integration with the NHVR’s existing Azure environment.
