How the Lakehouse Democratizes Data to Help Amgen Speed Drug Development & Delivery

Amgen, the world’s largest independent biotech company, needed a modern way to unify growing clinical, manufacturing, and commercialization data to improve cross-functional analytics, R&D productivity, supply chain planning, and drug development. After moving beyond legacy systems and a Hadoop data lake, Amgen chose the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform to create a connected, collaborative data foundation.

Databricks helped Amgen implement a lakehouse architecture with Delta Lake, Databricks SQL, and Databricks Machine Learning, supported by AWS Glue and Amazon S3 as the data backbone. The results were significant: processing times improved by 75%, insight delivery became 2x faster, compute costs dropped by about 25%, and more than 2,000 users were able to access 400TB of data across 40+ data lake projects and 240 data science projects.
