A Databricks Case Study
Bechtel Corporation, the largest construction company in the United States, needed to accelerate project completion and reduce operational costs across complex mega-projects. Facing industry-wide issues—98% of mega-projects overrun on cost or time—Bechtel also struggled to scale compute for large neural networks, ran algorithms that would have taken years on legacy hardware, and lost productivity to team and data silos plus time-consuming maintenance and governance tasks.
Bechtel adopted Apache Spark and the Databricks Unified Analytics Platform to unify ETL, analytics, and machine learning, simplify infrastructure management, federate security controls, and give data scientists on-demand resources while enabling developers to productionize models faster. The change improved cross-team collaboration and accelerated iterative training and deployment of deep learning models, with potential value creation of tens to hundreds of millions of dollars.
