Foreign Language Research Institute, a Maryland-based organization focused on multilingual instruction and translation services, was running desktop and application virtualization for about 200 users from a single data center. Its aging Citrix-based VM provisioning and management environment had been in place for nearly 10 years, and the institute wanted a fresh look at how to improve virtualization performance, delivery, and end-user experience. Data Networks was brought in to assess the environment and recommend a modern VDI approach.

Data Networks replaced the legacy setup with a Dell- and VMware-based virtual desktop infrastructure, including a Dell Compellent SAN, Dell PowerEdge R730 servers, and VMware Horizon View tools such as Connection Server, Composer, Security Server, and vRealize Operations for Horizon. After deploying the new image to all 200 users and resolving a remote-access issue with VMware, Data Networks significantly improved virtualization performance and stability. The institute later requested an additional 100 Horizon View licenses to expand virtualization to more users, showing the success of the project.
