Moz - Customer Case Study

Moz, founded in 2004, is a leading SEO company behind tools like Followerwonk, Moz Pro and Moz Analytics. The company faced a major cost challenge: heavy reliance on Amazon Web Services drove up cost of goods sold (COGS), with AWS accounting for $7.2M of $10.8M, prompting public criticism from CEO Sarah Bird and pressure on profitability.

To address this, Moz began migrating workloads off AWS to a privately owned cloud starting in 2012. Owning their infrastructure reduced costs while improving reliability and efficiency; the company returned to profitability in 2014, continued growing revenue, and cut cloud spend to $2.85M by the end of 2016.
