A Data Foundry Case Study
MemSQL, founded in 2013, is a real-time analytics database platform that combines database, data-warehouse and streaming workloads in one system. The company originally ran on rented AWS VMs, but as co-founder Eric Frenkiel noted, a steady workload and rapidly rising cloud bills made that approach uneconomic.
To control costs MemSQL bought its own physical servers instead of continuing to rent from AWS. At the time it was spending about $324,000 per year on AWS; buying the needed hardware cost roughly $120,000 up front and reduced three‑year costs from an estimated $900,000 on AWS to about $200,000 on owned infrastructure, with the hardware paying for itself in about four months.
