Streamlining ship outfitting design with CATIA

Universal Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), a leading Japanese shipbuilder, faced a critical knowledge-transfer challenge: moving shipbuilding know‑how from seasoned designers to a new, less experienced workforce and improving information flow to production sites. To modernize outfitting design and support 2D–3D workflows, USC selected Dassault Systemes’ CATIA V5 as its companywide 3D outfitting design platform.

Dassault Systemes implemented CATIA V5 across USC’s design sites, integrating schematic, 3D piping, equipment layout and drawing production workflows and developing interfaces to existing production and fabrication systems. The change cut training time dramatically (from roughly ten years to about one–two years for new designers), improved fitting performance and collaboration with production sites, reduced onsite workload, and enabled broader deployment of 3D models and standardized catalogs across USC’s shipyards.
