Shanghai MicroPort Orthopedics - Customer Case Study

Shanghai MicroPort Orthopedics sought to expand into total knee replacement (TKR) implants and needed a cost‑effective, accurate way to compare fixed‑bearing and mobile‑bearing designs. They adopted the SIMULIA Abaqus Knee Simulator (AKS) from Dassault Systemes to perform semi‑automated dynamic finite‑element analyses of competing TKR configurations.

Using AKS, Dassault Systemes enabled MicroPort to auto‑mesh and assemble realistic implant and soft‑tissue models and run gait and squat simulations that would have taken a week to set up manually but only a day or two with the tool, with analyses completing in hours to a few days versus months for physical testing. The work showed only slightly greater rotation for mobile bearings and little difference under squat loading, while substantially cutting prototyping and mechanical testing time and cost—saving development effort and potentially shortening future clinical trials.
