A Dassault Systemes Case Study
MAHLE GmbH, a global development partner to the automobile and engine industry, tasked Dassault Systemes with a major efficiency challenge: reduce engine size by 50% and cut fuel consumption by 30% while maintaining performance and durability. Dassault Systemes supported MAHLE with simulation-driven engineering, including finite element analysis and design validation tools to guide the concept and production-feasible approach.
Using Dassault Systemes' simulation and FEA workflows, MAHLE developed a 1.2 L I3 twin-turbo engine that delivers power and torque equivalent to a normally aspirated 2.4 L V6, demonstrating the targeted downsizing and efficiency gains. The concept engines validated combustion robustness, low-speed torque, transient response and durability, provided a platform for testing components, fuels and oils, and established a mass-production-capable route to more fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles.
