Case Study: LOCOMACHS achieves leaner, faster wing assembly with Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE (DELMIA)

LOCOMACHS, a collaborative European R&D project to develop low‑cost manufacturing and assembly methods for composite aircraft structures, needed to cut time‑consuming shimming and optimize wingbox assembly and whole production lines to meet growing air‑traffic demand. To address this, project partner Prodtex turned to Dassault Systemes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, using DELMIA for digital manufacturing and CATIA for design to virtually plan and validate fixtures, robots and assembly sequences.

Using Dassault Systemes’ 3DEXPERIENCE applications, Prodtex simulated hexapod robots and a full virtual wing factory to test assembly scenarios, detect clashes, and optimize ergonomics and takt time. The solution enabled selection of the best assembly method, produced virtual work instructions, balanced workloads, improved safety, and cut shimming by about 50%, reducing errors and lead times while lowering operator training needs.
