Extending the reach of clean, renewable solar energy with SolidWorks

Solar Infra, Inc., a manufacturer of solar modules, needed to overcome environmental limits that kept standard arrays out of coastal, high-snow and extreme-heat regions and to extend inverter lifecycles so modules could be used anywhere. To solve this, Solar Infra relied on Dassault Systemes’ SolidWorks 3D CAD and SolidWorks Simulation tools (working with Sandia National Laboratories and partners) to integrate design and FEA-driven analysis for rapid iteration.

Using Dassault Systemes’ SolidWorks solutions, Solar Infra developed the ACE module with an integrated microinverter and a new frame profile that doubled frame strength while increasing weight only 4%, extended DC-to-AC inverter life toward 25 years, reduced manufacturing costs by 25%, and saved about $100,000 in prototype development—enabling deployment in hurricane-force winds, heavy snow and extreme temperatures and extending the reach of clean solar power.
