Eni - Customer Case Study

Eni, the integrated energy company, needed full-scale geomechanical models to forecast and prevent well failures and environmental impacts from reservoir compaction and subsidence. To address this challenge, Eni employed Abaqus finite element analysis (FEA) from SIMULIA — part of Dassault Systemes — to simulate the coupled fluid-flow and mechanical behavior of reservoirs at both field and well scales.

Dassault Systemes worked with Eni to automate the workflow that links ECLIPSE flow simulations into Abaqus, including automatic data translation, meshing/upscaling, and elasto-plastic analysis. The Dassault Systemes-enabled solution reduced model setup time from nearly two months to about four weeks, cut computational time and memory use so full-scale models with millions of degrees of freedom can run in hours, and produced more precise, predictive subsidence analyses that let Eni run more internal studies and better manage production and environmental risk.
