Blue Sky Solar Racing - Customer Case Study

Blue Sky Solar Racing, the University of Toronto student team, needed to design and build its seventh‑generation solar car (B‑7) in a compressed two‑year window to meet the stringent 2013 World Solar Challenge regulations. To accelerate development and improve collaboration, the team adopted Dassault Systemes’ 3DEXPERIENCE Platform for Academia, using CATIA for virtual product design, DELMIA for digital manufacturing (including Human Builder), and SIMULIA (Abaqus) for realistic simulation and FEA.

Dassault Systemes’ tools provided a server‑based, integrated workflow for multi‑discipline design, virtual testing, ergonomics checks, and composite optimization, helping the team shorten development and production into a tight thirteen‑month cycle, identify and fix driver‑vision and buckling issues, and reduce weight while improving stiffness. The B‑7 finished the 3,021 km World Solar Challenge in 45 hours 38 minutes (65.7 kph average), placing 8th overall (2nd among North American entries) and achieving the team’s top‑10 goal.
