Community Engagement on Future Flood Risks

Lake Macquarie City Council, one of the largest cities in New South Wales, needed to engage lakeside communities about rising lake levels, flooding and future adaptation measures as part of its Flood Risk Management Plan. To manage this complex stakeholder engagement program, the Council adopted Darzin Software’s community and stakeholder engagement platform (implemented in 2013) to capture, organise and report community feedback for the Planning for Future Flood Risks project.

Using Darzin Software, Council ran invitation-only workshops with more than 60 participants and logged stakeholder feedback into the platform for analysis and reporting. Darzin generated stakeholder breakdowns (by type and age), word clouds and participant-satisfaction metrics that informed a publicly available engagement strategy; the tool’s success also led the Council to expand its Darzin licence to support other projects such as the Cardiff Streetscape and contaminated lands initiatives.
