Case Study: New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs achieves secure digital identity verification with Daon biometrics

A Daon Case Study

Robust biometric security for New Zealand’s RealMe verified identity

The Department of Internal Affairs (New Zealand) wanted to increase uptake of its RealMe verified identity service, but many applicants dropped out at the final step because they had to visit a PostShop for in-person photo capture. To improve convenience and reduce abandonment, the DIA worked with Daon to explore a more flexible digital identity verification approach using biometric technology.

Daon implemented the RealMe Now capability with web photo capture and a mobile app, powered by Daon biometrics and server-side liveness challenges to help prevent spoofing. The result was a more secure and convenient identity process that let New Zealanders verify from home or on the go, and in just five months about 10,000 passport holders used the app to successfully apply for a RealMe verified identity. Daon’s solution also expanded RealMe access across more devices and channels while supporting future use for KYC and AML purposes.
