A DALIM SOFTWARE Case Study
The American Association for the Advancement of Science hired David Tompkins in 2001 to build a prepress operation for its weekly journal Science and found its analog, film‑based workflow was creating inefficiencies and file rejections. To modernize and standardize production, AAAS adopted DALIM SOFTWARE solutions, primarily DALIM TWIST with the DALIM WEBLINK interface (and later DALIM MISTRAL and DALIM DIALOGUE), to move from manual film output to an all‑digital PDF workflow.
Using DALIM SOFTWARE’s tools and a synchronized workflow with printer Brown Printing (and systems integrator Blanchard Systems), AAAS raised file accuracy from about 70% to nearly 100%, eliminated printer rejections, and saved over $300,000 a year in RIPping and preparation charges; they now deliver trouble‑free PDF/X‑1a files and receive reduced per‑page fees. The DALIM TWIST/Weblink system also automates repurposing for online and app formats, supports soft proofing, and AAAS is implementing DALIM ES to improve job tracking as it shifts toward a closed‑loop RGB workflow.
