How SimpliSafe’s small engineering team uses YAML DSL within Dagster’s powerful data platform to support analysts and business stakeholders

SimpliSafe, a provider of home security services and IoT technology, faced a challenge in supporting its data platform. With a small engineering team of just six people, it was difficult to manage the vast scale of data processing for hundreds of business users while also giving dozens of analysts the autonomy to create new data pipelines without constant engineering support.

Dagster provided the solution by serving as the core orchestrator for a custom YAML-based Domain Specific Language (DSL). This allowed SimpliSafe's analysts, who were proficient in SQL but not Python, to define and deploy their own data pipelines through a simple YAML interface. The result was a dramatic increase in leverage for the engineering team, which now spends minimal time on support and troubleshooting, enabling them to focus on expanding the platform and improving data quality for over 300 users.
