A D2L Brightspace Case Study
Valdosta State University partnered with local school systems to pilot a competency-based education (CBE) model for K–5 teachers seeking a science endorsement after finding existing state programs inadequate. The challenge was to create a flexible, mastery-focused online program that working teachers could complete on their own schedules while ensuring rigorous assessment of real classroom practice.
VSU adapted the Brightspace platform—creating a separate CBE instance with custom front-end, analytics, intelligent agents, and a mastery rubric—supported by a success coach, instructor, and assessor team (funded in part by a JumpStart grant). The pilot enabled authentic, personalized demonstrations of mastery, resulted in successful completion by all 10 pilot teachers, and gave VSU practical insights into designing and scaling CBE programs.
