A D2L Brightspace Case Study
The State University of New York (SUNY), a 64-campus system serving roughly 370,000 credit students, faced a fragmented digital learning environment: campuses ran 58 different LMS instances across multiple vendors with inconsistent security, authentication and user experiences, forcing students and faculty to manage separate logins and workflows and driving higher license and support costs.
SUNY created a centralized Digital Learning Environment and selected D2L Brightspace, deploying it across 58 campuses (three instances, 56 in one multi-tenant instance), integrating with 55+ SIS instances and migrating about 360,000 courses. The rollout standardized navigation and authentication (SUNY Global IDs, MFA), enabled shared training and support, integrated 200+ LTI tools, and centralized data—resulting in a consistent systemwide experience, reduced licensing and implementation costs, and new opportunities for cross-campus collaboration and analytics.
