Sinclair Community College - Customer Case Study

Sinclair Community College, serving about 20,000–22,000 students annually, set out to introduce competency-based education (CBE) with grant support. During the transition their legacy LMS was acquired by Blackboard and would no longer be supported, forcing the college to find a new learning platform while scaling its CBE initiative.

Sinclair implemented D2L’s Brightspace, using its Learning Object Repository and Release Conditions to deliver competency-based courses that let students progress at their own pace and give coaches live data for more informed advising. In the first three years CBE students averaged two terms to complete their first program (vs. four for non-CBE), finished degrees in about four terms (35% faster than non-CBE students), and had graduation rates twice those of non-CBE students.
