Rising to Top Three in Rankings Through Digital Learning Innovations

The University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine needed a way to keep student engagement high as cohort sizes grew from 48 to 150, while also improving support for non-clinical skills like teamwork and communication. Using D2L Brightspace, the university faced the challenge of streamlining communication, reducing staff email overload, and delivering personalized feedback at scale.

D2L Brightspace helped the University of Surrey implement flipped and team-based learning, weekly quizzes, Kahoot competitions, rubrics, video feedback, and structured discussion forums. The results included 100% positive feedback in “Learning Community” and “Overall Student Satisfaction,” a rise in NSS “Learning Resources” ranking from 60th to 3rd, and an overall UK NSS ranking jump from 102nd in 2020 to 4th by 2023, alongside higher engagement and reduced administrative burden.
