Rewriting the textbook for student success with adaptive learning

British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), a large polytechnic in western Canada, partnered with D2L to address a common problem: students preparing for comprehensive certification exams felt overwhelmed by large textbooks and broad course content, while instructors spent excessive time reteaching material instead of advancing skills. BCIT needed a scalable way to pinpoint individual knowledge gaps and boost student confidence without one-to-one tutoring.

BCIT integrated D2L’s Brightspace LeaP into its Brightspace LMS to deliver adaptive learning paths, paragraph-level textbook linking with publishers, and self-assessments that guide students to targeted content. The initiative increased engagement and instructor capacity and drove measurable gains: cohort scores rose 26.5% on average, students below 70% improved 48%, and higher-performing students gained 8.7%, with strong adoption and improved learner confidence.
