The Professional Development Institute (PDI) delivers UCSD‑approved online courses that help K‑12 teachers gain practical skills for classroom use. PDI faced a persistent challenge: teachers’ busy schedules, remote locations, and caregiving responsibilities made in‑person professional development impractical, while manual reporting and administration threatened the organization’s ability to scale and meet the rigorous approval requirements of UCSD Extension.

PDI partnered with D2L to build a Brightspace-based LMS using templates, quizzes, discussion boards, Dropbox integration, release conditions and custom automated reports. The platform created a flexible, affordable 24/7 learning environment, eliminated nearly four days of weekly administrative work, enabled scaling without new hires, helped secure UCSD Extension approval, and improved customer service and course responsiveness for thousands of teachers.
