Prince William County Schools’ Virtual High School program offers students the flexibility needed to achieve their individual goals

Prince William County Schools’ Virtual High School (VHS@PWCS), a pioneer in online secondary education since 2000, needed to give students greater scheduling flexibility, ensure consistent master-course creation, and relieve overcrowded high schools—while meeting a new state requirement that every student take at least one online course.

PWCS implemented a blended learning expansion using D2L’s Brightspace and SoftChalk Cloud, centralizing course authorship with designated learning content authors and delivering anytime/anywhere courses to students and partner schools. The program saw a record summer 2013 enrollment of 760 students (a 20% increase), an average course pass rate of 90% and SOL pass rate of 91%, added 180 students through the blended expansion to ease overcrowding, and has served over 10,000 students since inception.
