Minnesota State IT Center of Excellence - Customer Case Study

The Minnesota State IT Center of Excellence (ITCOE), hosted by Metropolitan State University and serving 37 colleges and universities in the Minnesota State System, needed to rapidly upskill learners for high‑demand IT fields like cybersecurity, data science, DevOps and agile while overcoming uneven resources, integration costs, and the need for flexible, industry‑aligned online learning across a large, distributed system.

Using D2L Brightspace, ITCOE developed and shared a library of modular, one‑credit online courses (168 modules) built with common templates, exportable packaging, and assessment and badge tools so any campus or workforce partner can adopt them instantly. The program drove a dramatic rise in engagement—faculty participation nearly tripled systemwide, module use expanded from a handful to 20+ campuses, campus involvement grew from 6 to 22, and industry and workforce partners increased collaboration—boosting student access to career‑ready IT training statewide.
