Helping Teachers Become World-Class Educators

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), which represents over 83,000 elementary teachers and education workers, needed to make additional-qualification professional development accessible to members who couldn’t attend traditional face-to-face courses because of time, distance, and cost. ETFO also wanted courses that were practical for classroom use and infused with social justice and equity, so teachers could immediately apply what they learned.

ETFO partnered with D2L to build teacher-created online courses using the D2L platform and tools like Capture, Daylight, Bongo, Intelligent Agents, and custom Learning & Creative Services, delivering mobile-responsive, interactive learning with personalized feedback and progress tracking. The result: 80 courses to date, first-year enrollment tripled (1,500 vs. a 500 target), steady year-over-year growth for nine years, recognition from the Ontario College of Teachers, and many teachers reporting immediate classroom impact.
