Helping Students with Disabilities to Enter the Workforce

Academy Canada is Eastern Canada’s largest independent career college with 15 locations across Newfoundland and Labrador that specializes in supporting students with learning and physical disabilities. The organization needed a way to make curriculum and instructor resources more accessible and flexible so students with diverse needs could complete programs and enter the workforce successfully.

Working with D2L, Academy Canada deployed the Brightspace LMS with built‑in accessibility features (assistive tools, multisensory supports, alt text, captions and visual scheduling) and streamlined instructor workflows for individualized accommodations. As a result, course offerings grew from 32 to ~200, online enrollments rose from 40 in 2015 to over 1,000 in under five years, 98% of students would recommend the college, and diploma‑to‑degree articulations increased by 80%.
