Capturing and Sharing Canada’s Musical Heritage

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a leading Canadian cultural institution, faced the challenge of extending orchestral music education to students and non-specialist teachers in a context where many schools lack dedicated music staff. Backed by Canada 150 funding, the TSO aimed to capture performances and create approachable resources that would bring the concert hall into classrooms and engage a broader national audience.

Partnering with D2L, the TSO recorded concerts from multiple camera angles and launched a bilingual Canada Mosaic e-learning site featuring a custom HTML5 video player, interactive visuals, and 10 teaching modules with lesson plans. The initiative preserved over 40 performances, has engaged more than 2 million Canadians, and gives teachers measurable, easy-to-use tools to enrich music education.
