Building a Collaborative Learning Platform

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) is the professional body that trains and supports anaesthetists across Australasia, serving thousands of members and trainees. Faced with a legacy LMS that required costly customizations and made it hard to support multiple learner types, rapid content updates, and collaboration among 70+ committees and stakeholder groups, ANZCA needed a more flexible, scalable platform.

ANZCA implemented D2L’s Brightspace (including the Daylight UI, intelligent agents and release conditions) to create collaborative “networks” for committees, deliver media-rich, competency-based courses, and sell select courses to non-members via Course Merchant with automated enrolment. The platform boosted engagement—active users rose 22% year over year (about 1,000 monthly logins), enabled personalised learner homepages, and automated routine management tasks, freeing staff to focus on higher‑value activities.
