Achieving 3X Growth in Online Learning Through Student Choice

Grand Erie District School Board needed a way to give students across its large, diverse district access to more courses and flexible learning pathways, especially in smaller rural schools that could not staff a wide range of in-person options. Working with D2L Brightspace, the board built an eLearning program to support student choice, specialized interests, and varied needs such as individualized learning plans and athletic schedules.

D2L Brightspace helped Grand Erie District School Board scale its online offerings through course expansion, teacher professional development, and customizable tools for personalized instruction. The program grew from 16 sections to 80 in two years, helped the district meet or exceed provincial course medians, and enabled offerings like the province’s first dance course, while also boosting teacher engagement and student access to specialty subjects.
