A digital book club and other unique ways that HWCDSB uses Ontario’s VLE

Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, the Catholic school board in Hamilton, Ontario, was looking for a safe, flexible digital learning environment to support teachers and students across elementary, secondary, and adult education. Using Ontario’s Virtual Learning Environment, powered by D2L Brightspace, HWCDSB needed a way to bring together digital tools, support professional learning, improve assessment practices, and engage students in online and blended learning.

D2L Brightspace helped HWCDSB implement the VLE for uses ranging from a digital book club and Math PA days to EQAO preparation and Catholic faith development. The district also piloted the Brightspace Portfolio tool in 10 kindergarten schools, which expanded to 20 schools and became the sole documentation tool for those teachers. Results included positive teacher and student feedback, wider adoption across the district, and a noted positive correlation between quiz completion and higher EQAO success levels.
