How Autodesk’s PlanGrid uses Cypress to ensure quality in over 2 million projects

PlanGrid, Autodesk’s construction productivity platform used on over 2 million projects and by ~90,000 active users, faced growing QA pain: a six-person Automation Platform team relied on a disorganized Selenium-based suite (~50 tests) that was slow to run, hard to debug, and frequently skipped, putting mission-critical services at risk as the product scaled. To accelerate velocity, reduce maintenance, and change testing culture, PlanGrid evaluated options and selected the Cypress Test Runner.

Using Cypress, PlanGrid built a shared internal library of custom commands and CI integrations so developers could write, debug, and own tests more easily; Cypress’s JavaScript-based runner and Dashboard capabilities made tests faster and more debuggable. The results speak to the impact: 2,000+ tests run daily, ~4 minute average test run time (without parallelization), 20+ repositories reuse the shared Cypress library, and 20+ custom commands for efficiency—helping democratize testing, reduce maintenance, and materially improve quality as PlanGrid scales.
