A Current Case Study
The University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW) sought to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse emissions while improving lighting quality and campus security. Steve Pickard of UNCW's facilities management selected the Chancellor's Walk as a showcase location. UNCW partnered with vendor Current, utilizing their Beacon "Windsor" decorative post-top luminaires for this project.
Current's solution replaced high-power sodium and metal halide fixtures with efficient 48-watt Beacon Windsor LED luminaires. These provided light levels comparable to 175-watt metal halide sources while consuming only one-fourth the energy. The LED light engines are designed for 50,000 hours of maintenance-free operation, estimated at 11.7 years. Additionally, Current's Beacon "Traditional" luminaires were installed on campus buildings, each using under 25 watts. These upgrades significantly reduced energy use and long-term maintenance costs for UNCW.
