The U.S. Military, through its Defense Health Agency, sought to establish a feasible protocol for performing same-day outpatient bariatric surgery. The challenge was to safely manage postoperative care remotely to reduce the need for inpatient stays, thereby lowering costs and freeing up essential hospital capacity. They partnered with vendor Current Health to utilize its remote patient monitoring platform for this initiative.

Current Health implemented its remote patient monitoring technology to provide continuous in-home monitoring with cellular data transmission, eliminating the need for patient WiFi. The solution included automated prompts and multi-language support to drive high patient adherence. The study demonstrated that outpatient surgery with Current Health's support was safe and feasible, achieving similar outcomes to inpatient procedures while directly attributing significant cost savings to the program by enabling a shift to the outpatient setting.
