Technology-Enabled Virtual Ward Improves Outcomes & Delivers Excellent Patient Experience

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, serving a population of 391,000 across Croydon, needed to reduce pressure on its emergency department and acute hospital services while safely managing more acutely unwell patients at home. To support its Rapid Response Service, the trust worked with Current Health and its care-at-home platform to help prevent unnecessary admissions and enable earlier discharge, even as referrals increased in volume and complexity.

Current Health implemented a technology-enabled virtual ward in July 2020, giving the team continuous monitoring, telehealth, and patient engagement tools to manage up to 30 patients at a time. The results included 4,642 bed days saved over 17 months, a 70% reduction in hospital readmissions post-discharge, a patient NPS of 55, and estimated savings of £742.44 per patient, while patients were three times less likely to require an in-home visit.
