Reducing Bed Occupancy Through Virtual Monitoring of Patients with Acute Cholecystitis

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) wanted to reduce reliance on inpatient beds for patients with acute cholecystitis who needed monitoring before surgery. Working with Current Health, the trust looked to move pre-operative care into patients’ homes using a virtual ward and care-at-home monitoring service.

Current Health’s care-at-home platform, combining continuous remote patient monitoring, alerts, telehealth, messaging, surveys and a clinical dashboard, enabled NNUH to safely manage these patients at home until their operation. The pathway has treated 150 patients so far, kept escalation back to a physical bed below 5%, and saved approximately 1,000 acute bed days in 16 months, with 100% of patients saying they would use the service again.
