OrionVM Builds Breakthrough IaaS Cloud Platform with Cumulus Linux

OrionVM, a wholesale IaaS provider founded in 2010, set out to build a high-performance, cost-efficient cloud platform but needed a simpler, more flexible networking approach to achieve 10G price/performance, rapid automation, and freedom from vendor lock-in. The company required a design that preserved its aggressive cost margins while enabling rapid deployment and new platform features.

OrionVM deployed Cumulus Linux on Edge-Core and Agema switches in a two-tier L3 fabric (OSPFv2 + BGPv4 via Quagga) with PTMd for topology verification, reusing existing Linux daemons and orchestration tools for automation and monitoring. The result was a ten-fold performance increase at the same cost, significant CapEx and OpEx savings, the ability for the same engineering team to manage switches and servers, and dramatically faster service delivery (from ~24 hours to ~10 minutes) with higher bandwidth options.
