NephoScale Builds Scalable, Affordable Cloud Network with Cumulus Linux

NephoScale, a cloud IaaS provider whose NephOS software powers hybrid cloud deployments, needed to move from a 1G to a 10G environment while keeping operations automated, programmable and affordable. Facing capacity limits, they evaluated vendors and chose Cumulus Linux for its native Linux architecture, support for Layer‑3 Clos fabrics and VXLAN, and seamless integration with their existing tools and Chef-based workflows.

They deployed Edge-Core 10G top‑of‑rack switches running Cumulus Linux in a Layer‑3 Clos design, using BGP/Quagga and Chef to fully automate provisioning and configuration. The result: dramatic OpEx reductions, at least 3x lower CapEx per 10G port versus traditional providers, faster rack deployment (from days to under a day), consistent, reliable configurations, and integrated monitoring via Nagios, Graphite and sFlow.
