World’s Largest Farm Fish Boat

Larsnes Mek Versted AS, working on the Ro Fjord for Rostein AS, needed reliable auxiliary power for the world’s largest live-transport well-boat while helping protect live fish from disease and sea lice during transport. The vessel’s fish-handling, filtration, and monitoring systems required more power than a typical 72 by 66.6-meter vessel could provide, so the project called for marine generators and emergency power from Cummins.

Cummins supplied two KTA38DM1-powered generator sets at 936 kW each, plus one QSM11DM-powered emergency/harbour generator set at 320 kW. These units power a wide range of ship services, including the steering gear and two tunnel thrusters, while supporting the vessel’s advanced live-fish transport systems. The result was the successful delivery of Ro Fjord in 2009, a 2,750-cubic-meter well-boat designed to carry about 400 tons of live fish with extra safeguards such as UV-treated return water and filtration to reduce environmental risk.
