A Cummins Case Study
The US Army’s Bridge Erection Boat service provider needed an updated bridge erection boat that could be rapidly launched, operate in fast-moving silt-laden rivers, and maneuver or hold floating bridge segments in place under difficult conditions. After decades of use, the Army sought a more capable replacement that could also transport personnel and cargo when needed.
Cummins supported Birdon America’s winning BEB design with twin QSB6.7-liter engines, each rated at 248 HP, paired with ZF gears and NAMJet TJ38IHH jets. This solution helped the vessel exceed 25 knots and perform reliably in severe water conditions, contributing to the Army’s selection of the Series II Birdon Bridge Erection Boat and a contract for 374 boats.
