Time Bandit - Customer Case Study

Time Bandit, the 113-foot Alaskan crab boat featured on “The Deadliest Catch,” needed a major repower to replace aging Cummins KTA19 engines that had delivered decades of hard service. The crew wanted more reliability, better performance, and modern electronically controlled power for demanding crab and salmon operations in harsh Bering Sea conditions.

Cummins supplied new QSK19-M marine engines and 6BT-series engines for the gensets, with the Hillstrand brothers helping assemble one of the engines at the factory. Cummins also supported upgrades to props, cooling, hydraulics, and hull protection. The result was improved low-speed maneuvering, higher transit speed from 7.5 knots to 9 knots at 1500 RPM, and more flexible, fuel-efficient operation under varying sea conditions.
